Dale E. Smith, age 77, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2017 at the Promedica Ebeid Hospice Center. He was born on April 16, 1939 to the late Sylvia and George Smith in Toledo, Ohio.
Dale served his country as a member of the "Big Red 1" in the U.S. Army for 3 years. Upon his return he began a career at Teledyne C.A.E. where he assembled and tested projects for our military for 25 years. He enjoyed bowling on leagues for many years, but his greatest passion was little league baseball. What began as a career coaching young boys in the 1980's evolved into umpiring baseball and softball games for children of all ages into his late 60's. Attending the Little League World Series was one of the highlights of his life.
The quintessential grandparent/fan, Dale never missed any of his grandchildren's activities, sporting events, dance recitals or school functions. His last activity was the championship game of his young grandchildren, Blake and Taylor, last week. A lifelong Green Bay Packers' fan and shareholder, Dale fulfilled a bucket list dream when he attended the Shareholder's meeting last July with his grandson Joe and spent several days at the stadium. In December he fulfilled one of his final wishes when he traveled to Florida for his granddaughter Shelby's wedding and cruised with his family to the Bahamas. "Papa" was the life of the cruise, a magnet for the young people and excited to enjoy a beer with his grown grandchildren at Sen~or Frog's in Nassau.
Dale lived a full life, but had longed to rest eternally with Shirley for 23 months and 1 day. The family is comforted by the knowledge that they have been reunited.
Dale was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Shirley; brothers, Larry Smith, Bill, Barney and Bud Bowers. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Phyllis (Dennis) Bixler and Dale Jr. (Cindy) Smith; adored grandchildren, Joseph Bixler, Shelby (Anthony) Chilson, Blake and Taylor Smith; sister, Debby (Frank) Dillon and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests from 3-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Entombment will take place at Restlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to: ProMedica Ebeid Hospice.
