Clarence F. Young

June 2, 1932 — January 28, 2025

Sylvania, Ohio

Clarence F. Young, born on June 2, 1932, in Taylorville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025, in Sylvania, Ohio. He lived a life marked by dedication to family, a diverse career, and unwavering religious conviction.

Clarence was a man of many talents and reinventions throughout his career. He began in sales with Watkins Products and Fuller Brush, transitioned to welding at the Toledo Shipyards, and even ventured into sewing machine repair. Ultimately, he established a roofing business until his retirement. This journey not only showcases his versatility but also reflects a strong work ethic instilled in him from a young age.

A proud graduate of Stonington High School, Clarence attended college for one year before enlisting in the Air Force in December of 1950. He trained as an aircraft engine mechanic and served honorably through the entirety of the Korean War, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant before his discharge in October of 1954.

Clarence was known for his stoic demeanor, yet his heart was unreservedly open to his seven children, with whom he shared playful moments that became cherished memories. With affectionate names like “lunch-lunch,” “jinner,” and “souner,” he created a warm familial atmosphere that continued with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was at the core of his being; he cherished Sundays spent in church and attended every school event, a testament to his deeply rooted commitment to them.

His devoted wife Mary, who predeceased him, was the one individual who consistently brought out the very best in him. Married for 54 years, their relationship was characterized by mutual love and respect, leaving a legacy that all their children remember fondly through shared moments of kisses and hugs.

Throughout his lifetime, Clarence's dedication to family remained paramount. Regular visits to his parents and siblings were integral to his life, further emphasizing his strong familial ties. His faith played an essential role in his daily activities, and he was an active member of Good Shepherd  Catholic Church in Toledo, later joining All Saints in Rossford, Ohio.

Clarence takes with him the precious memories of a loving family, including his siblings Howard Young, Roy (Jolene) Young, Nadine Sila, and Benedict (Janice) Young, and his children: Rosemary (David) LaForest, Brian (Annette) Young, Cynthia Gardner, Paul (Sue) Young, Clarence A. (Gayle) Young, Mark (Beth) Young, and Joy (Jim) Dauterman. He is also survived by 17 beloved grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his cherished wife Mary Agnus (Richardson) Young, his parents Clarence Adam Young and Monica Lou Hebenstriet, his sister Rosemary Walton, and his sisters-in-law Bonita (Bonnie) Young and Beverly (Bev) Young, as well as brothers-in-law Jerry Walton and Charles (Chuck) Sila.

In reflecting on his life, his family unanimously acknowledges his proudest accomplishment: raising seven children who grew into independent adults, each making meaningful contributions to the world in their own unique ways. Clarence F. Young leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and steadfast commitment to family—values that will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those he touched.
