Clara Susan Acker, age 82, of Toledo Ohio, passed away December 5, 2017 at University of Toledo Medical Center following medical complications. She was born June 14, 1935 in Anderson, South Carolina to John and Geneva (Williams) Acker. Clara was raised with her 3 brothers and 5 sisters to respect adults, to care about and help others and to love GOD. Yes Sir and No Sir were words learned very early in the Acker household.
During Clara's years in Anderson SC, Clara developed a love for the church. She loved to sing and learned to play the piano by ear; a unique, self-taught skill. Clara inherited a few other special skills that none of her brothers and sisters were ever able to touch. Mother Geneva taught Clara to cook and to bake. What will we ever do without Clara's mouth-watering macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.
As an early teen-ager, Clara moved north to live with her sister Reba and brother-in-law Louis McCullough in Toledo, Ohio. 1507 Palmwood became home to Clara as well as her younger brothers and sisters who followed. Clara worked various jobs and helped raise younger brothers – John, Nelson and James and sister Bernice. Her love for the church never wavered. She joined Third Baptist shortly after moving to Toledo. She continued to play the piano and sing in church with sister Frances.
As her brothers and sisters grew up and moved away from Palmwood, Clara found a job that she loved to the end – the dry cleaners. Clara was employed by various dry-cleaning companies around the city and ended her long career as a supervisor at Sylvania Dry Cleaners/Sylvania Ohio. When not working, Clara relished in spending time with her family; including cooking for BBQs and surprise birthday parties. She became second mother to her sisters and brother's kids. Maw Clara didn't take no mess. Clara also found comfort shopping, decorating, tending to her garden and going on cruises. Whether she was playing baseball with her family at Pearson Park or caring for family pets Nickie, Koli and Pedro, Clara kept her life filled with love.
Clara is survived by her siblings, Loraine Tarrent; Reba McCullough, Frances Knox, John Acker, Bernice Taylor and a host of nieces and nephews; their spouses and children and an endless list of friends. She is preceded in death by her parents John and Geneva Acker, her sister Helen Starr, and brothers Nelson Acker and James Acker.
The family will receive guests Friday, December 15, 2017 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at Third Baptist Church, 402 Pinewood Ave Toledo, Ohio 43604. Funeral Services will follow at 12:00 pm at Third Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
Clara was a rare jewel and will truly be missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.
