Claire S. Whitehead, 90, of south Toledo passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Spring Meadows Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. Claire was born on September 25, 1925 in Clarksdale, MS to the late Zencille and Carlton Slay.
Claire was a graduate of Ruleville High School. She attended Delta State Teachers College and graduated from the University of Toledo. Claire married James K. Whitehead on June 6, 1946 and they resided in the Toledo area their entire lives together. Mrs. Whitehead was a high school teacher and librarian for Springfield Schools for 30 years retiring in 1989. Claire was an active member of Church of St. Andrew UMC and taught Adult Sunday School for many years. She was a Jennings Scholar and an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Claire was a "life-long learner" and loved to travel, often combining the two! She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.
Claire is survived by her children, Katherine Claire (Mike) Harrod, James Carlton (Sonya) Whitehead, Rebecca Alice (Rick) Stewart; grandchildren, Michael Hoover, Jim Harrod, Christopher, John and David Whitehead, M. Scott and Tim Stewart; ten great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Claire was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jim; parents and grandson, Robbie Hoover.
The family will receive guests from 2-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Church of St. Andrew, 3620 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, the Alzheimer's Association or the church.
