Chet, age, 87, died peacefully on September 2, 2021 with his wife Agnes and son John expressing their love to him. He was born in Urbana, OH, February 25, 1934, to Rev. Gerald and Cladda (McDaniel) Barnes. He grew up in Bowling Green, OH and graduated from BGHS in 1952. Chet suffered a stroke in July, followed by major surgery in August.
With both of Chet's parents being ministers, they sent him to Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, IL, hoping he would graduate with a Christian wife and a call to the ministry. They got 50% of their wish – a Christian wife. He also has graduate degrees from University of Toledo.
After graduation, Chet was drafted into the U.S. Army and served most of his time at Fort Hood, TX, where Agnes joined him.
They moved to Toledo in 1959. He taught in Toledo Public Schools 31 years, first at Glenwood Elementary, then Crossgates Elementary, and 16 years as a guidance counselor at Woodward High School. He retired in 1996 and has helped his wife with her photo business Eye-Catching Photos since then.
After the death of their daughter, Beth Ann, in 1980, they facilitated a support group for bereaved parents and began one called Care Bears for students at Woodward.
They have traveled extensively to Europe, South Africa, China, Micronesia, and most of the United States.
Chet is survived by wife, Agnes; son, John, grandchildren, James and Lauren and sister, Jerri Tipton.
