Charles Edward "Pastor V." Vermilyea, age 82, of Toledo, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 5, 2006. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 10, 1923. After graduating from Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City, NY on June 2, 1947, Charles married his beloved Donna Wylie the following day – they just celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.
He served as pastor in several churches – Carmel Avenue Baptist Church, Detroit, Michigan; First Baptist Church, Weston, MI; First Baptist Church, St. Louis, MI; Highland Village Baptist Church, Racine, WI; and First Baptist Church, Newaygo, MI. He also served as Executive Director of Continental Baptist Missions in Grand Rapids, MI. After retiring from full-time ministry in 1997, he moved to Toledo and served at Emmanuel Baptist Church as Visitation Pastor until 2005.
Charles is survived by his wife Donna (Wylie); son Timothy (Barb) Vermilyea of Quebec City, Canada; daughters Cathy (Mark) Engwert of Toledo, Ohio, Joy (Kit) Pherson of Ninilchick, Alaska, and Ellen Vermilyea of Toledo, Ohio; grandchildren Heidi (Tim) Bott, Wendy (Chris) Baker, Mandi, Ben (Stacey) and Matt Vermilyea, Diane, Esther, David, and Carla Pherson ; 4 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; sisters Loretta Vermilyea and Vi Vetter; and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, infant son Paul Edward and brother George.
The family will receive guests Thursday 2:00-9:00 PM and Friday from 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 4207 W. Laskey Rd. Funeral Services will begin Friday at 1:00 PM at the church followed by a private burial service at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park .
