Charles (Charly) Leonard Quick, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 30th, with his wife of nearly 70 years (Carol) and family by his side. Born in Warren, Ohio on February 9, 1931, he was the son of Glen Winans Quick and Eva Marie (LaPointe). He was predeceased by his three sisters Jeanne (Lori), Dolores (Brindle), and Phyllis (Sauve).
Charles graduated from Michigan State University in 1953, entered the US Army in January of 1954, and married Carol J. Schlatter in July of that year. After an honorable discharge from army service in 1959, he went on to teach in the Toledo Public Schools for a few years before starting a nearly 30 year career teaching biology and life science courses at the University of Toledo, from which he also earned a Doctorate in Education. Throughout the 60's he had a small nursery business as a sideline. His three sons (Greg, Jeff, and Bill) all had plenty to do playing in the dirt with him growing up. He was a naturalist, enjoyed hunting, birds, botanical backyard cultivations, most all activities outdoors, and especially fishing. He was indeed a good fisherman. All of us able to share that experience with him knew we were fortunate to do so. Both he and Carol enjoyed traveling and adventures around the world, visiting over 100 different countries. Their travels varied from a river cruise deep into the Amazon River jungle on a rusty boat without air conditioning to Paris with chocolates placed on the pillows at night. He was also an avid genealogist, and compiled detailed histories of the Quick, Lapointe, Schlatter, and Kaehr families dating back to the 1500's across the continents.
Charles is survived by his wife Carol along with his three sons. Greg (Debbie), Jeff (Beth) and Bill (Loni), and grandsons Ben, Jon, Glen, Noah, and Nathan.
For all who offered prayers, support, visits, care and love over last few months, including Friends of the Family Homecare and Hospice of Northwest Ohio, we say thank you.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the Nature Conservancy or other organizations that are good stewards of the earth.
A celebration of life for both Carol and Charly will be held from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, June 23rd, at the Pavilion at the Bedford Hills Golf Club, 6400 Jackman Road in Temperance, MI.
Charly will be missed by all of us……but not by the fish
