Charles John Machala, age 94, of Toledo, passed away June 23, 2015 at the Sunset House. Charles was born September 23, 1920 to Michal and Stefania Machala in Czechoslovakia. Charles was a graduate of Rossford High School. He was employed with the Acklin Stamping Company for more than 50 years before retiring. Charles proudly served on a submarine in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Charles was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where he served as an acolyte for over 30 years and served on the Vestry. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. Charles started running at age 66, ran his first marathon at age 74 and continued running until age 83. He enjoyed collecting stamps, coins and antique dolls. Charles also enjoyed attending the opera and UT women's basketball games.
In addition to his parents, Charles was also preceded in death by his son, Charles "Sonny". He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Geraldine "Jeri" Machala, daughter Kathey Hartman, grandchildren Heather Rohrs, Rachel Machala and Jill Dorsey, 6 great grandchildren, along with daughter-in-law Sue Machala.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Sunset House and Ashanti Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to Charles during his illness.
A funeral service for Charles will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (2770 Central Ave. Toledo).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Charles's memory.
