Charles Howell

Charles "Charlie" Howell, age 79, of Toledo, passed away Monday, June 30th, 2008 at West Toledo Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. He was born February 2, 1929 into a large family in Hackleburg, Alabama. Charlie has only 4 surviving sisters, Maebelle Phipps of MI; Charlsie Brealand of Missouri; Mellene Tice of AL and Luevell "Sue" Stager of Toledo. Charlie served in the U.S. Navy and then married and remained married to Catherine (Schiffman) Howell for 58 years. Their union brought 2 wonderful children, Mike and Elaine Howell; granddaughter, Heather Kae and great grandchildren, Hunter and Shirley.

Charlie was a fisherman and a wildlife enthusiast teaching both of his children to fish and enjoy the outdoors. The family looked forward to the 2-3 week family vacations in Ste. St. Marie, MI and Ontario Canada for pike fishing.
His son Mike's school was in need of a Cub Scout leader and Charlie offered his service and became a leader for many years. He also was involved with the older scouts through Indian Dancing performing at many area churches and schools.
Seeing that the neighborhood kids enjoyed ice skating and hockey Charlie flooded the vacant lot behind his house and hooked up flood lights so the kids could have a place to skate and have lot of fun. He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, but due to his poor health Charlie was unable to attend services each week. Charlie was a tool & dye maker for more than 35 years working at several area shops, retiring at the age of 60 because of his health and an impending heart surgery. But because he enjoyed helping people, Charlie returned to the workforce at Bartz Vivano and Janney's Ace to help in many different ways.

Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church, 4069 W. Sylvania Ave. Officiating will be Rev. John Richards. Interment will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.

The Howell family would like to thank the nurses and aides of West Toledo Healthcare for the loving care and support they provided for Charlie during his stay.
