Charles A. Fleig, 94, of Toledo, passed away on January 30th, after a brief illness
Charley was born March 13, 1927 to Anthony and Cecilia Fleig in South Toledo. He was a child of the Depression, always worked hard and saved whatever he could. During his childhood there were many croquet tournaments under the lights, cook-outs, and he surprisingly liked playing the accordion. After High School graduation he enlisted in the Army/Air Corp and was promptly sent to the Bavarian Alps in Germany. When asked how he ended up in Germany he quickly stated "I was just lucky". Most of his fellow enlistees were on their way to the Pacific at the same time.
After his Air Corp honorable discharge, he met Barbara Ana Campey, married her in May of 1953, and remained married to her for the rest of his life. During his career he was a millwright, custom cabinet maker, and his professional mark was made as a finish carpenter. As a finish carpenter he had many satisfied clients and builders over a thirty-year career. The highlight being one of the finish carpenters for the Parade of Homes in Toledo, many times over.
Charley was a determined force of nature. During his lifetime it was his way or the wrong way, and he wasn't afraid to let you know. He was fiercely loyal to his family, and his gropu of friends. The "cronies" as he called them; fished, bowled and golfed together for over fifty years. We have heard many of the stories told by Charley about these escapades, and there are some we can't repeat.
Charley was preceded in death by his mother and father and an infant sister. He is survived by his wife of over 68 years Barbara, and his brother James A. Fleig. Sons Edward (Beth) Fleig, Kenneth (Wasana) Fleig, Ronald (Sandy-deceased) Fleig, and Chuck (Lora) Fleig. Grandchildren Matthew (Alison) Fleig, Melissa (Doug) Holland, Christopher Fleig, Veronica (John) Kandik, Tyler (Gerry) Fleig, and Jessica Fleig. Great Grandchildren Payton, Isabelle, Ryder, Olivia, Lila, and Oliver.
Anyone that knew Charley watched him mellow as the grandchildren arrived. He tried to be a provider of their needs, and be supportive in anything they were interested in. He truly was one of a kind, and will be greatly missed.
