Catherine B. "Katie" Samson, age 83, of Toledo, passed away on February 28, 2013 at Kingston Care Center, Sylvania, surrounded by her devoted family; she was lovingly embraced at Heaven's gates by her husband, Charlie and daughter, Pennie. She was born on December 2, 1929 to Stanley and Mary (Dembinski) Mikolajczyk in Toledo. Katie was a graduate of Woodward High School in 1948, where she met the love of her life and was the Senior Year Football Queen. Four years later she married Charles Samson on May 3, 1952 and they celebrated 54 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2006. Katie was a 59 year member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish and also served on the funeral luncheon committee. Her first job was with Tiedtke's Department Store, then she had worked at the Toledo Scales, Ernst and Ernst and then retired in 1985 from Canteen Vending Corp. Katie was an active member of the Pioneers of America. She enjoyed perch fishing on Lake Erie, sewing, knitting, crocheting and also volunteered with Odyssey Hospice by donating many of her handmade crocheted blankets. Katie was an excellent cook and baker, especially cake decorating. She loved the time spent with her family, specifically her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the apple of her eye. Katie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, husband and daughter, she was preceded in death by her sons-in-law, Gary Colquhoun and Mark Haynes. Katie is survived by her loving daughters and sons-in-law, Cathie and Guy Harman, Metamora, Sandie Haynes, Lewisville, TX, and Cindie and Tom Schmit, Appleton, WI; grandchildren, Kylie (Kord) Schrowangen, Lewisville, TX, Hollie (Sam) Hendricks, Zanesville, OH and Candace (Jeremy) Parker, Sylvania; great-grandchildren, Kolin, Tyler, Mason, Hannah, Colten and Kage; sisters, Dolores Schaefer and Phyllis Miller; brother, Stanley (Pat) Mikolajczyk; brother-in-law, Don (Mira) Samson; and many special nieces and nephews, and dear friends.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 4555 North Haven, Toledo, 43612, with a Memorial Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the church. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Toledo, (419-473-0300) assisted the family with professional services.
