Carol Quick

March 22, 1932 — May 22, 2024

Carol Schlatter Quick, 92, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Born in Toledo, Ohio on March 22, 1932, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Lydia (Kaehr) Schlatter. She was predeceased by her three sisters Elaine Burgos, Marilyn Stager, and Virginia Cosgrove, and survived by her brother Larry Schlatter (Robert Bennett), and three sons, Greg (Debbie), Jeff (Beth) and Bill (Loni), and grandsons Ben, Jon, Glen, Noah, and Nathan. Her husband of nearly 70 years, Charles (Charly) recently passed away on April 30, 2024.

Carol attended Heidelberg College in Ohio before enrolling at Michigan State University, where she received a degree with a specialty in Audiology and Speech Science. While at MSU she met Charles Quick, and they were married in the summer of 1954. Both she and Charly enjoyed traveling and adventures around the world, visiting over 100 different countries. Their travels varied from a river cruise deep into the Amazon River jungle on a rusty boat without air conditioning to Paris with chocolates placed on the pillows at night. She did remark from time to time that she truly enjoyed the chocolates. She adored all of her family, her children, grandchildren, and the many nieces, nephews, and more who were all fortunate enough to know her embrace of love and care. We all knew she was a good cook, too.

In 1959 she was hired by the Toledo Public Schools as a “Speech Correctionist” and assigned as a Teacher of the Deaf. She worked tirelessly on behalf of all her students, and eventually had duties as a special education teacher, administrator, grant writer, and directed several state and federal early intervention programs and projects. Among her many endeavors, she was instrumental in establishing the Early Childhood Special Education Program for Toledo Public Schools in the 1960’s, as well as co-authoring a book about Bittersweet Farms, a community based organization that supports Adults with Autism. She was an innovative thinker who involved family in the process of educating children with special needs long before it was the popular and scholarly thing to do. She brought out the best in people.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Bittersweet Farms or other organizations that represent the care and dignity of everyone, including those with disabilities.

A celebration of life for both Carol and Charly will be held from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, June 23rd, at the Pavilion at the Bedford Hills Golf Club, 6400 Jackman Road in Temperance, MI.
