Beverly A. Rose

April 30, 1935 — September 23, 2021

Beverly Ann "Bev" (Kubitz) Rose, 86, a lifelong resident of Toledo, Ohio, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021, and has taken the place reserved for her in heaven.

Born April 30, 1935, Bev was the second daughter of Harold William Otto and Virginia "Jean" (Dyer) Kubitz. She married James Gilbert "Jim" Rose on June 15, 1957, in Augsburg Lutheran Church, Toledo.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, David J. (Paula Wethington) Rose of Monroe, Michigan; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda (Robert) Long of Woodstock, Georgia; grandson, Bobby Long; granddaughter, Karolyn (Matt) Gore; two great-grandchildren, Henry and Mary; along with nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Dean Conklin; former husband, Jim Rose; and her sisters, Nancy Klawitter and Faith Vleck.

Bev graduated in 1953 from DeVilbiss High School; and earned her bachelor's degree and master's degree in education from the University of Toledo. She was a member of Chi Omega while at University of Toledo; and both she and Jim enjoyed performing in a drama club during their school years.

When she was a college freshman, Bev was interviewed by The Toledo Blade in 1953 for a feature on future teachers for Teacher Career Week. The reporter's question was "Why do you want to become a school teacher?" Her reply: "I've loved school since I was 6 years old. The best way to stay in school is to become a teacher. I like little children and will enjoy being with them every day."

Bev's first teaching job was at Trilby Elementary in the Washington Local School District. Most of her career was at Toledo Public Schools, including at Gunckel Elementary and Hawkins Elementary, and substitute teacher assignments. Her favorite field trips with the students included fall visits to MacQueen Orchards.

She was a Girl Scout troop leader for a time.

Bev had been a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Toledo since the 1980s, where she often contributed her cooking talents to church dinners. Before that, she held membership at Grace Lutheran Church and Hope Lutheran Church. During the 1960s and 1970s, she was quite active in the work of Lutherans for Human Dignity in Toledo. She also had served as a Lutheran Church of America representative to the Toledo Metropolitan Mission.

During the 1960s, Bev and Jim were among the first homeowners in the Orchard Hills neighborhood. She later moved to an apartment in the Heatherdowns and Reynolds neighborhood of Toledo.

She was known for her love of cats; with a gray cat, Herbie, her most recent feline companion.

Bev moved to The Glendale Assisted Living just before the pandemic began. A couple of weeks ago, Bev was interviewed in a video feature the Glendale staff produced in honor of Grandparent's Day. Her last family visit, three days before she died unexpectedly, was with the two great-grandchildren she mentioned in that video.

The family will receive guests Sunday, October 3, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Newcomer SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). A Memorial Service will be held Monday, October 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Ohio of Toledo in Bev's name.
