Betty Jane Sherer

December 27, 1929 — June 14, 2017

Betty Jane Sherer, age 87, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, June 14, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born on December 27, 1929 to Jay D. and Barbara A. (Iveson) Northup in Toledo.

Betty was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School, Class of 1947 and was an active member of the Class of 1947 - Reunion Committee where she looked forward to visiting with her old classmates. She started working at Lucas County State Bank when she was 16 years old and following graduation she worked in the bookkeeping department for 5 years. For many years she worked for Sylvania Savings Bank at the Trilby Branch as a teller. Betty's relentless work ethic earned her the position of Vice President - Operations Manager for Trustcorp Bank, where she had nearly 60 employees working for her. She was an accomplished business woman, doing well for herself in the banking industry when women were scarce in the professional field.

After retirement she worked for Newcomer Funeral Home for 10 years where she was a faithful and compassionate support staff member. Betty enjoyed interacting with the families and guests and enjoyed camaraderie with her fellow co-workers.

She was a former member of Toledo Toastmasters Club, National Association of Bank Women and Judson Baptist Church.

For those she loved, they'll fondly remember her for being a tireless political hound, martini aficionado, overindulging and fine dining, simple and delicate taste in jewelry... always pearls over diamonds, she enjoyed classic love stories at the Westwood Theatre before it was, "The Westwood Theatre!" and most importantly, her giving nature, infectious laugh, quick wit and having a way with her words and never short on an opinion. Above all she was dedicated to caring for her family and will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and a dear friend to many.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Doug Sherer; grandchildren, Ashley, Drew and Dustin Ochoa; great-granddaughter, Destiny Heminger; niece, Beth (Tom) Drake; cousin, Nancy Jo Durham; nephews, Michael (Zita) and Tim Northup; sister in law, Sharon Northup; family friend, Bill (Sharon) Christy and her family at Newcomer Funeral Home. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Northup and sister, Mariann Grimes.

The family will receive guests from 2-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Her Funeral Service will begin in the funeral home on Monday, June 19, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
