Bertrum "Bert" H. Nielsen, Jr. age 89, of Toledo, passed away February 11, 2021 at University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born August 18, 1931 in Cleveland, OH to Bertrum, Sr. and Esther Nielsen.
Bert grew up in Cleveland and graduated from Western Reserve University. Three days after graduation, he married the love of his life, Carol, and shortly after that went on active duty with the Marine Corp. Bert served at Quantico, VA followed by Cherry Point, NC Air Station where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.
Upon honorary discharge from the military, Bert began his 30-year career with Standard Oil of Ohio. During his career, he was also involved in numerous civic activities in the communities in which he and his family lived. After retirement, Bert and Carol traveled extensively. In addition to traveling and spending time with his family, Bert's interests included church activities, photography, bicycling and OSU football. Go Bucks!
He is survived by his wife, Carol, daughters, Kathy Warden and Nancy Nielsen; granddaughter, Linda Warden; sisters, Patti (Cal) Oppenheim and Barbara (Mark) Costakes; brothers-in-law, Col. Donald Halliday and Paul H. Pangrace and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Bert was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joan Halliday.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 4560 Glendale Ave or the Charity of the Donor's choice in Bert's memory.
