Bernard Macke, 89, passed away on November 4, 2017, at home.
Ben was born October 26, 1928, in Leopold, Missouri, the son of John and Emma Macke. Ben and Rose Catherine Jansen were married on April 15, 1950, in a double wedding ceremony with Rose's sister, Agnes Jansen and Leo Broshuis.
When Ben was 17, he followed his older brother in the military, by joining the U.S. Marine Corp on September 18,1946. After their wedding, they lived in Norfork, Virginia, while Ben served in the Marines, then they moved to Toledo, Ohio, after his discharge. He served almost five years in the Marines, five months overseas. He obtained vocational training from Macomber High School, where he learned the refrigeration and air conditioner trade. During the Korea War, he was recalled to the military, and continued his service as a Marine until August 16, 1951. He worked as an electrician and plumber in refrigeration and air conditioning, and was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Local 50. He was a member of St. Stanislaus, and after its closing, St. Charles Catholic Church. He was also a longtime member of the Fourteenth Ward Old Time Baseball Association located in Toledo, Ohio. He enjoyed baseball, reading, fishing, gardening, and playing cards with family.
Survivors include five sons; Paul (Myrna), David, Alan, Wade (Suzanne), Arnold; two daughters: Jenny (Glenn) and Karen (Tom); 15 grandchildren: Dawn (Jason), Scott (Brittany), Sylvia, Sean (Miira), Eric, Andrew, Mickey (Valerie), Matthew, Sara (Robert), Daniel (Amber), Kimberly (Daniel), Edward, (Stacey), Mary (Brett), Crystal, Arnold John (Carrie) 15 great-grandchildren: Camrin, Colton, Carson, Callie, Arlo, Lili, Logan, Elise, Marc (Steph), Jade, Xavier, Daniella, Hannah, Emma, Garrett, and with one on the way; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Vivian.
He was preceded in death by one son, Earl Joseph, and one grandson, Tommy, his parents, four brothers, John Albert (Ethel Mae Vance), Vincent Paul (Anna Hoernig), Bernard Alphonse, Lawrence Joseph (Clara Macke); and five sisters, Mary Delores (Sister Mary Ruth RSM), Clara Frances (Ilde Bax), Rachel Elizabeth (James Elfrink), Ruth Catherine (James Bax), and Barbara Marie (Mel Hilman).
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
