Bernadine "Bernie" J. Dick, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 7 at Flower Hospital with her family by her side. She was born January 9, 1932, the daughter of Dorris and Emma Cousino of Curtice, OH. She lived at St. Anthony's Orphanage from ages 7 to 12, after which time she was adopted by the late Hilda and George Mittendorf.
She attended St. Agnes School and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. In 1953, she married Vincent E. Dick, the love of her life and husband of 41 years. Bernie was a dedicated woman in all aspects of her life - as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend, and servant of God in the Catholic tradition. She was an exceptional waitress for 27 years, working initially at Howard Johnson's, and then for the Bungalow Restaurant. She was also a professional cake decorator and an active member of St. Agnes Parish. Her cooking and baking skills were second to none. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
She is pre-deceased by her loving husband Vincent, son Thomas "Tommy", grandson James (JP) Hogan, and sisters Edna Heckman and Annette Schuster.
Those left to forever cherish her memory are her children, Kenneth (Connie), Patrice Dick Exton (Tom), David (Susan), Karen, Jane Sanborn, and Mary (Gary); seven grandchildren, Adam, Alanna Smaw, Amy, Emily, Aaron, Stephen, and Jennifer el Asri; eight great grandchildren; sister, Jeannette Robison; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of ProMedica Goerlich Memory Care Center, especially Reagan, Reba, and Laura, for their dedication to Bernie's care and well-being for the last seven years.
Family and friends may visit on Friday, April 21, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 West Laskey Rd. in Toledo. A Memorial Service will immediately follow. Visitation will continue Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., after which time she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Vincent, at Calvary Cemetery.
