Arthur E. Smitley, III passed away on October 4, 2015 at the Merit House.
Arthur was born to Arthur and Mildred (LeBowsky) Smitley on June 3, 1951 in Toledo. Gene, as he was known to family and friends, graduated from Rogers Highs School in 1969. In 1989, Gene had an accident which incapacitated his health and ultimate ability to work. Gene was an avid sports fan who frequented many games of the Toledo hockey teams and the Mudhens. He was also a strong Ohio State Buckeye fan. His hobby was trains, be it watching the local trains throughout the Toledo area or his involvement with the Swanton Area Railroad and Model Club where his services were recognized in November 2012. Gene was also a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Michael Simmons. He is survived by his siblings; Susan (Tom) Simmons of Canton, OH, Linda Watkins, Karen (Jim) McDowell, Arnold (Virginia) Smitley all of Toledo and Janet Weber of Charlotte, MI, uncle, Arnold (Dolly) LeBowsky, many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom he loved very much.
Per Gene's wishes, there will be no services. A special thanks to his nephew Timothy Watkins and his special friend Sandy Connerton for all they did for him. Those wishing to make any donations can do so in Gene's memory to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1825 Glendale Ave. Toledo, OH 43614. Arrangements were entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. 419-473-0300.
