Arthur James

February 7, 1932 — December 18, 2015

Arthur Frederick James passed away Friday, December 18, 2015 after a long illness.

A lifelong Toledo resident, Arthur was born in Flower Hospital on Feb. 7, 1932. He was a graduate of Sylvania Burnham High School, Columbia University in New York City, and the Columbia University School of Law.
Arthur made his decision to pursue a career in law based on a bet. When a friend bet him $50 that he couldn't pass the LSAT, he declared that not only would he pass it, but he would score better than his friend. Needless to say, Arthur was $50 richer going into law school. After graduating, Arthur served for three years in the Marine Corps. He then practiced law in Toledo for nearly 40 years. In the 1960s, Arthur participated in Toastmasters and in community theater, most notably appearing as Captain Fisby in the Toledo Repertoire production of Teahouse of the August Moon. Combining his law profession with his passion for writing, Arthur co-wrote and participated in the Toledo Junior Bar Association's annual Gridiron show for several years.'
Arthur loved Toledo, the Cleveland Browns, sailing, golfing, playing cards, and challenging friends to see who could complete the New York Times crossword puzzle in the fastest time. His true passion, however, was jazz. He discovered his passion for jazz while attending Columbia University, where he would frequent world famous jazz clubs such as Birdland, and he even had the opportunity to record with legendary saxophone player Stan Getz. He learned to play by ear and was well known throughout Toledo and the surrounding area not only as a performer but as a passionate supporter of jazz.

Arthur is survived by his brother Dr. Douglas James (Martha) of Vermont. He is also survived by his wife Carole, his daughters Ceri (Jeffrey) Paul, Mimi (Mark) Ehlen, son Douglas (Ree) James, and Carole's children, whom he loved as his own, sons Michael Hubay, Joseph (Angie) Duris, and daughters Michelle (Mike) Downard and Lori (Catherine McCarthy) Duris. Arthur is also survived by grandchildren Arthur Paul, Harry (Emily) Paul, Eliza Ehlen, Sarah James, Indiana James, Heather (Nathan) Mason, Rachel Vaughn, Joseph Duris, Callyn Jo Duris, Zackery Hubay, Zane Hubay, as well as by many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Alice James, and by his brother, Dr. Franklin James.

Per Arthur's request, a memorial service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Arrangements were entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home 4150 W. Laskey Rd. 419-473-0300
