Anthony J. Oberneder, age 69, of Maumee and formerly of Toledo, passed away Sunday, February 27th, 2011 at The University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born August 11th, 1941 to Anton and Anna (Altmanshofer) Oberneder in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tony was a graduate of Woodward High School, Class of 1960. He was also a U.S. Army Reservist. Tony was employed with GM Powertrain for 34 years retiring in June of 1997. He loved spending time with his family, whether it was going on vacations together, traveling and camping or just taking his grandkids to the movies and sharing a laugh or two. Tony was known for his love of movies and his knowledge of movie and movie star trivia. He also enjoyed music of all kinds, Sinatra and "Somewhere in Time" were a couple of favorites. Tony had a wonderful sense of humor and always put others at ease with his friendly smile and warm laugh. As a 2 time cancer survivor Tony knew that a sense of humor and a little support from his family and friends would give him the strength he needed to make it through any difficult times. His strength of character was a true inspiration to everyone that knew him.
In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his sisters, Anna Piette and Isabella Oberneder and his aunt and uncle that raised him, August and Margaret Rahe. He is survived by loving wife of 48 years, Shirley A. (Manz) Oberneder; children, Anthony Allen (Shelly) and Gregory M. (Irma) Oberneder, both of Delta, OH and Lisa Wuest of Bowling Green, OH; grandchildren, Vicky, Elliott, Megan, Evan, Chelsea and Cassandra; brothers, August "Gus" (Barbara) and John (Pam) Rahr; sister-in-law, Beverly (Ed) Nicholson of NC; brother-in-law, Dick Piette and Family of WI and special friends, Dale and Mary Fulwider of Fremont, OH and Bea Altevogt of Swanton, OH.
The family will receive guests Wednesday from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will begin Thursday at 9:45 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.at St. Joan of Arc Church, 5856 Heatherdowns Blvd. Officiating will be Fr. Gregory R. Hite. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
