Alvin Eugene Updegraff, 93, passed away Friday, January 15, 2016 at the EBEID Hospice Residence in Sylvania. He was born June 8, 1922 in Toledo to John O. and Margaret (Knorr) Updegraff. After graduating from DeVilbiss High School in 1940, he joined the United States Army. He was a decorated World War II veteran, having served in Africa and Germany.
Known as "Gene" by some and "Al" by others, he was employed at the local
Chevrolet plant, and also served as the Chief Agent for the Toledo Humane
Society. He instilled his love for animals, especially dogs, in his entire family. He loved to play cards, especially Euchre, was an avid bowler, and enjoyed camping. Al married Judy Andress on September 10, 1976, who survives. Between them, they have three surviving daughters: Joyce (Art) Shiley of Clyde, OH; Marge (Chuck) Mendeljian of Temperance, MI; and Kelly (Lewis) Roe, of Petersburg, MI. "Grandpa Gene" is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his brothers, John R. and Richard K. Updegraff; as well as his grandson, Casey Eugene McHugh.
Alvin loved his family to the end, and they invite friends to visit from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm, Monday January 18, 2016 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd, Toledo, 419-473-0300. Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, at the Funeral Home with Pastor Lilanthi Ward officiating. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
