Allen Schifford, age 96, of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully on January 19, 2017 at Arbors of Sylvania where he was being treated by Hospice for kidney failure.
Allen was born May 26, 1920 in Toledo to Gordon and Anna Belle (Wable) Schifford. He was employed by the Norfolk Southern Railway Corporation for more than 31 years, retiring in May, 1981. Allen was a proud WWII Army veteran in the 148th Infantry, 37th Division, and saw action while serving in the North Solomon and Philippine Islands Campaigns. He never tired of telling stories about that time in his life, and was especially proud to take part in a series of interviews conducted by the the Veterans Administration last year. The interview relayed Allen's war experiences in his own words, and is now housed in the Library of Congress.
Allen is survived by his nephew Gary (Coral) Handy. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Helen, and siblings Doris Passamano, Lucille Hancock and Margaret Valentine.
The family will have a private family gathering at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Road, Toledo, Ohio. A graveside service with full Military Honors will take place at 1:30 at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions be given to the Cherry Street Mission.
