Alexander, born in Toledo on July 17, 1924, passed away on October 12, 2013. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he served on the escort carrier USS Marcus Island (CVE 77) as a turret gunner on a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber. He won the Air Medal after his plane sunk an enemy cruiser in the Battle of the Leyte Gulf. He continued his military involvement with the Naval Reserves at Grosse Ile NAS after the war. He was member of the Marine Corp League/Lou Diamond Detachment and participated in an Honor Flight in 2012.
Alex was a metal polisher/buffer and was employed at Doehler-Jarvis and Moore Chrome, he was a union steward and very proud of his union involvement.
He leaves daughter Patricia (Paul) Gutmann, son Terrence (Susan) Cukierski, grandchildren Steven (Theresa) Cukierski and Scott (Megan) Cukierski, sisters Stella (Alvin) Blachowski and Helen Cukierski, and brother Chester (Norma) Cukierski. Preceding Alex in death were his wife Hedwig, (Knurek)daughter, Jeraldine, sisters Julia (Stanley) Godlewski, Lucy (Frank) Klimkos, Angela (Joseph) Ruth, and brothers Anthony (Dolly) Cukierski and Donald (Linda) Cukierski.
In retirement, Alex drove a Chevrolet Silverado and would help anyone where there was a need. The family would like to thank the staff of Heartland of Perrysburg and care giver, Rachel Weber, for the special care given to Alex. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be considered for All Saints Catholic Church/Rossford, Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio, or Toledo/Northwest Ohio Food Bank.
A memorial service will be held for Alex on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at All Saints Catholic Church, 628 Lime City Road, Rossford. The family will greet people in the church narthex beginning at 9:00 a.m., with a Mass scheduled at 10:00 a.m.
