Alberta G. Burgess

Alberta G. Burgess, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2018. She was born on September 6, 1928 to the late Sally (Hurston) and Arthur Collins in Toledo, Ohio.

Alberta was a life-time member of Friendship Baptist Church and was the last original member. Alberta was the oldest "Mother" at the church, taught Sunday School and helped with the children's choir. Alberta was a "homemaker by nature." She loved spending time with her family, cooking and caring for them. Her family will miss her loving ways and each of their favorite dishes.

Alberta was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 71 years, Elbert Sr. "Coach"; children, Vickie, Elbert Jr., Edward and Deborah; son-in-law, Clinton Cooper; siblings, James Collins, Imogene Brown and Clara Carter. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sylvia L. Cooper, James W. Burgess and Sterling S. (Kay) Burgess of Las Vegas, NV; siblings, Mary Ann Tucker, Roosevelt Collins and Joseph (Bea) Collins; daughter-in-law, Donna Burgess; sister-in-law, Awana Westbrook and brother-in-law, Gordon Brown; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive guests on Sunday, July 1, 2018 from 4-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer – SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Wake Service will be on Monday from 10-11:00 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 5301 Nebraska Avenue, Toledo. The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Duane C. Tisdale will officiate. Burial will take place at the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
