Albert William Hess, Jr. 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 26, 2022. He was born on October 4, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Albert and Stella Hess. He was the oldest of 4 siblings. He grew up in East Toledo and attended Waite High School. He met the love of his life while attending the Church of the Open Bible. He married Gloria Hess on October 6, 1956 and was blessed with 3 daughters and 6 grandchildren.
Al started his career working at Jeep until he quickly realized his love of building and the art of using his hands starting with his flooring and then countertop business, remodeling and home construction. Al wasn't happy unless he was remodeling or doing room additions to whatever house he lived in. One of his proudest accomplishments was the home he bought with Gloria on Tremainsville that he remodeled and added and added, and added on to, until he ended up with a beautiful home that held many cherished memories. If this wasn't enough, he bought a house in Swanton at age 85 and proceeded to remodel the garage into a family room that he was still working on up until his health declined.
Al was actively involved in the Toledo Power Squadron for over 30 years including being the Commander, District Commander and the Chaplain. He loved boating and the lifelong friendships he developed while being involved in the organization.
He was a longtime member of Heritage Church of God, where he had various roles such as youth leader, Sunday school teacher, council member and usher. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Al was preceeded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Gloria Hess. His memories will be cherished by his daughters Debbie (Joe) Mollen, Becky (John) Poiry and Angela (Jim) Below; grandchildren Tyler (Nicole), Spenser, and Conner Mollen, Garrett Poiry, Amber and Alexa Below. Surviving are his siblings, Dave Hess, Bob Hess, and Sandy Vriezelaar. He will also be dearly missed by his devoted partner Lola Urbanski who provided such wonderful love, care and companionship over the past several years.
