AJ Simons, age 28, passed away on June 2, 2016 at home.
He graduated from Sylvania Southview in 2006. As a little boy, AJ always dreamed about serving in the Marine Corps. At the age of 9 years old in 1997, he joined the Toledo Young Marines, achieving the rank of SSgt. Leaving High School early to join, AJ served honorably in the Marine Corps from 2006-2009. He served with 2nd FAST in the Philippines and other missions. AJ served with 2/5 BOAT Co. in Afghanistan. He was wounded in combat causing Traumatic Brain Injury, severe PTSD and other injuries leading to an early discharge. AJ struggled with these and other challenges for many years. He will be remembered and sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his parents Larry and Wendy Simons; brother Roy (Michelle) Simons; beloved nephews Jared and Garrett; maternal grandmother, Georgeanne Lickert; paternal grandfather Roy Gomez; Uncle Tim and Aunt Tammy Lickert, Uncle Dave and Evie Lickert, Aunt Susan and Uncle Tim Rex, Uncle David and Aunt Dawn Gomez, Aunt Debby and Uncle Ed Boontjer; cousins Danielle, Samantha, Chase, Tyler, Megan, Brittany, Hannah, Nicholas, Heather, David, Crystal, Mark and especially Kiersten. AJ was very active in the Veterans Community and formed many lasting friendships. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Paul Lickert; paternal grandmother Rosel Gomez and countless Fallen Brothers and Sisters before him.
The family will receive guests on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
