Richard Allen Hayes, age 89, of Toledo, Ohio passed away on December 27, 2023. He was born on June 24, 1934 to Robert and Clara (Harrington) Hayes in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Richard graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from the Ohio State University in 1956. He went on to serve with the U.S. Army; he was called up to active duty in 1962 during the Berlin Crisis. After being honorably discharged, Richard went to work for General Motors. After that he worked for Textileather before his career took a new turn when he accepted a position as Scout Executive for the Toledo Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. In the early 70's he became data processing manager for Superior Overall. He retired from there in 1993. A few years later he returned to work at the University of Toledo where he served as Degree Audit Coordinator.
Richard's role as Scout Executive was partly motivated by his role as a father. Richard and Carole had three children, Kevin, Kathy, and Brian. When Kevin and Brian became active in Boy Scouts, Richard and Carole became active, too. Carole became a den mother in Cub Scouts, and Richard became scoutmaster. Richard remained active in scouting until Brian and Kevin went to college. Afterwards he became active with local cycling organizations, American Youth Hostels and the League of American Wheelmen. He also became active with TMACOG, Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments, and helped with groundbreaking work on Toledo's bike trails. His last big hobby was genealogy, and he did extensive research regarding his mother's side of the family, the Nellises.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carole (Dreyer) Hayes; children, Kevin J. (Myung Sook) Hayes, Kathleen M. (Daniel) Jansen, and Brian J. (Gloria) Hayes; and siblings, Nancy Hayes and Thomas Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Clara Fujioka and Kenneth W. Hayes.
