Joyce K. Shay

Joyce K. Shay, age 96, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord, on October 14, 2023, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. The widow of William Shay, long time Toledo Blade news man, she was born November 18, 1926, in New Haven, Connecticut, to the late Charles and Ursula (Russell) Kennedy.

Joyce was a graduate of the University of Bridgeport and also attended New York and Columbia Universities.

In the 1950's, she was a reporter for the New Haven Register. In her later years, she worked at Jacobson's Department Store. Joyce, who had a big heart and would do anything for anyone, volunteered over the years for Old Orchard and Gesu schools, Notre Dame Academy, St. Francis de Sales High School, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Flower Hospital.

Those left to forever cherish her memory are her loving daughters, Beth Ellen Brackin of St. Louis, Carol Ann Haukap of Lee's Summit, MO, and son, David K. Shay of Decatur, GA; six grandchildren, Shannon and Patrick Brackin, Madeline and Benjamin Haukap, and Peter and William Shay; niece, Rosemary Grant of Marblehead, MA; and nephew, Robert Shay of Los Angeles, CA.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband; and sister, Carol Ann Roy.

Family and friends may visit at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3655 King Road, Toledo, Ohio 43617, on Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 1:00 pm until the time of the memorial service at 1:30 pm.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joyce's name to Ebeid Hospice or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
