UAW Local 12 Member
During the "Dash" of Tom's life, he was born to Jewel and Kenny Matney. He was a choir boy, custodian, played in a band (he loved Bass!), had two children, a blended family, and won a Harley Davidson with a $50 ticket! Tom began his UAW career at Toledo Jeep in 1972, serving his co-workers as steward for many years. He loved his Union and appreciated what it provided for his family. Tom loved fishing, golfing and spending time with grandkids. He struggled for 13 years in chronic pain and various illnesses. Tom is no longer in pain and can resume doing all the fun things he's missed.
Tom is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jo An Matney; son, Mike (Rhonda) Matney; daughter, Melanie; brother, Kevin (Candy) Matney; nieces, Christy (Craig) and Tammy; step-son, J. Schikora; sister-in-law, Cookie Jackson; 5 "Grananimals" grandkids, Colby, Ben, Lauryn, Grace and Ruxin; and of course Mya his Jack Russell and napping partner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-son, Jon Schikora; two nieces; brother-in-law from the Shively family, along with his sister Lana and son-in-law, Mike Gumtow.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Burke and Dr. Moghul, for many years of care and to the Flower Hospital Staff and ProMedica Ebeid Hospice for helping Tom end his "Dash" as easily as possible.
A Celebration of Life for Tom will be held on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Tremainsville Hall, 2437 Tremainsville Ave., Toledo, OH 43613 with Gathering to follow until 4:00 p.m. after the celebration. (For the safety of the Matney family, masks are required with social distancing to maintain social connections.)
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the family for his grandkids.
