Jessie U. Scott

November 6, 1921 — May 27, 2018

Jessie U. Scott, 96, left this world on May 27th. Jessie was born on November 6, 1921 to Lewis and Annie Merryman in Hartsville, TN. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Elizabethton, TN and Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Memphis, TN where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1944. She worked as a surgical nurse in Bowling Green, KY. She joined the United States Army during WWII serving in the Philippine Islands where a large part of her work took place in Manilla, caring for US Soldiers. While in the Army she met a handsome soldier named Frank Scott and they were married in 1946. The two were married for over fifty years and had five children. She worked as a registered nurse in the Toledo Area and retired as the Director of Nursing of the Health and Retiree Center in Toledo, OH. Her red hair and similar temper earned her the loving nickname of "Torchy" from her husband. She was "Granny" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jessie had a spirit for adventure. She loved the outdoors. She and Frank traveled extensively and camped in many National Parks. She visited all 50 States, the last being Alaska at the age of 87. They had a trailer on Catawba Island and a cabin on St. Joseph Island, Ontario where they spent many summers and leave wonderful memories of those times for her family. Granny held an unofficial contest each year as to who would be the first family member to swim in Lake Erie. When she was the first, she would call everyone and claim victory. Days at Granny's were spent outside. Summer evenings were spent with the windows open listening to the Detroit Tigers or watching Granny and Grandad dancing to their favorite music in the living room. Jessie loved being active and continued to walk, ride her bike and swim several miles each week into her late eighties.

Along with her parents and Husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Runyon, granddaughter, Abigail Scott, sisters Lucy Stair and Frances Ward and brothers, Ernest, Raymond, Fred, DJ, Paul, Lewis and Roy Merryman.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Diana Emery, Mike (Darla) Scott, Gail Kenney and Richard (Susan) Scott. Grandchildren Scott Emery, Mike (Heather) Scott, Matt Scott, Brian (Gabby) Scott, Kellie (Jason) Lenhardt, Jackie Scott, Victoria Brownfield and Allison Scott; great grandchildren Jake, Raelynn, Kylie and Makenna Scott, Isaac Sifuentes, Layne Wahl and Maggie Brownfield. She is also survived by her sister, Sue Little of Elizabethton, TN and many nieces and nephews.
