Vanessa Swain Badgett, passed away November 22, 2017 at Ebeid Hospice Residence. She was born in Bessemer, Alabama to the late James and Pearlie (Stephens) Swain. She was employed with Toledo Public Schools for more than 30 years.
Van accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, Bessemer, Alabama. She attended Wenonah Elementary and High Schools; received a Bachelor's from Alabama A & M University, a Master's and Specialist's from the University of Toledo.
Upon moving to Toledo, Van joined Third Baptist Church in 1989. She was active for many years in the Missionary Society and sang in the Sanctuary Choir for a short time. Van was a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was a supporter of the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, The Toledo Zoo, Toledo Museum of Art and Toledo/Ohio Retired Teachers.
Vanessa is survived by her husband, Frank R. Badgett; siblings, Lucille Swain, Dorothy Swain Wormley and James Swain, Jr.; uncle, Isaac Stephens; cousins, relatives, friends and students; step-children, Robert DeVoe, Tamar Badgett, Nashon Badgett, Brittany Hampton Bey and Preston Newell. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Swain.
The family will receive guests Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Newcomer - SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will begin Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
